Here’s a challenge for our eagle-eyed readers! It turns out that Switzerland’s precise, rigorous, and detail-oriented cartographers sometimes take a bit of creative liberty with official maps. This article from Eye On Design has more.
A transgressive little fish, spider, marmot, hiker and more have all been hidden in plain sight over the years. And while no cartographers have been fired for breaking their commitment to accuracy, most of the illustrations have been timed around retirements, or were found years after publishing.
Some of the drawings remain for decades before being discovered, but once they are found, they are often removed with the next edition of the map. While charming, they are still not topographically accurate and up to the Swisstopo’s high standard.
What do you think? Would you have noticed the hidden pictures below?
The Hiker.
The Fish.
The Marmot.

What a charming discovery!
I love the subtle Swiss humor! Just sorry they don’t leave them in the maps. 😦
