This post is from one of our members who recently enjoyed afternoon tea at one of Geneva’s lakeside hotels, Hotel d’Angleterre.

One afternoon in early February, three friends and I decided to meet up for tea at the Hotel d’Angleterre. Fortunately, we had booked in advance and while almost every table ended up being taken, we had been given a lovely window table with a stunning view of the lake.

The table setting was exquisite and the white-gloved service was impeccable. I do admit that the biggest challenge  of the “traditional tea” menu was choosing the tea to have from the extensive choice of teas. All the waiters had excellent English and were very well informed about the different teas as well as all the treats which are served with the traditional afternoon tea menu.

The assortment of five delicious and dainty finger sandwiches was every bit as inviting as the irresistible scones with Gruyère cream and jam. The splendid dessert part of the tea, composed of little cheese cakes, stuffed crepes, rice pudding and chocolate macaroons-just to name a few-was dreamy.

Oh, I almost forgot that a flute of Champagne is a great addition to this repast. Just make sure that you get a freshly opened bottle. Unfortunately, ours was a bit flat, but we were too polite to complain to the very efficient and polite waiters!

Though this was my first “tea” in Geneva, I have to admit that I indeed had moments of nostalgia remembering my former London days when “afternoon tea” was more the norm. So I fully recommend you give it a try – but don’t forget, it’s best to reserve.

Pricing: Traditional afternoon tea costs CHF 47 per person without champagne, or CHF 59 per person with a glass of Champagne Ruinart Brut. It might be a tad pricey but I felt it was well worth it. Go hungry!

Location and more information: Hotel d’Angleterre is located at Quai du Mont-Blanc 17, 1201 Geneva, Switzerland. Afternoon tea is served between 15:00 and 18:00 on weekdays, and from 12:00 on Sundays. More information is available at the Hotel d’Angleterre website.
