Cheerios. Root beer. Macaroni & Cheese. Graham crackers. Snapple. Wheat Thins. These are just a few of my favorite foods, ones I frequently used to purchase in the United States. After I moved to Geneva, though, I found that some of my American favorites aren’t stocked on the shelves of Coop, Manor, and Migros.
Don’t get me wrong – the food in Switzerland is of the highest quality, fresh, and delicious. But sometimes, I crave a particular food that reminds me of home. And I know I’m not alone!
If you’ve been searching for baking soda, Quaker instant oatmeal, Fruit by the Foot, or some other product you’d find at any U.S. grocery store, there are places in town that stock American food. The three most popular shops are American Food Avenue in Cologny, the American Market in Geneva, and the American Market in Nyon.
American Food Avenue in Cologny
Located in the commune of Cologny on Geneva’s left bank, American Food Avenue carries a wide range of American food products as well as an extensive assortment of baking needs, from cupcake stands and cake toppers to fondant, gum paste, sugar sheets, and sprinkles.
The store has an unassuming façade, but inside the products are always well-organized and the staff is friendly.
American Food Avenue is located at Chemin de la Mairie 7, 1223 Cologny on the “A” bus line (stop: Chemin des Fours). The store is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Click here for store hours. Their website is http://www.afoodave.ch
American Market (Geneva and Nyon)
The American Market stores in Geneva and Nyon are operated by the same company. The Geneva location is the smaller of the two, but both carry a wide range of American products as well as British and Latin foods. The website for the American Market is http://www.americanmarket.ch
The American Market – Geneva location is near the Cornavin train station at 3 Rue de Neuchâtel, 1201 Geneva. It is open seven days a week; hours of operation are available on the store’s website.
